Duke’s sister, Katie, has fleas, polyps that required removal, dirty teeth that required a dental, an ear infection and tapeworms. Duke has worn teeth that require a dental, an ear infection, a urinary tract infection, and a fatty lump. They will be brought up-to-date on all shots and preventatives as needed. This well-bonded sweet pair are doing well in their foster home waiting for their perfect home.
Foster Update: 6/1/16
This brother –sister pair continue to live the good life in their foster home. Both are very affectionate. Duke will take any opportunity to rub his face against your leg or arm or whatever part of you may be near. Katie is a licker when she gets a chance. Often after eating she comes to lick her foster mom’s hand as if to say,” Thank you for my food”.
The warmer weather seems to ease their arthritis and they wander around the backyard checking out all of the visitors. Duke often puts his nose in the air to see if there are any nearby canine friends who are also outside. If there is a neighbor dog outside, Katie gives a greeting with a couple of barks.
Katie has the more in charge kind of personality. We have 2 water dishes in the kitchen (6 dogs drink a lot!). One is at floor height and the other is raised because it seems more comfortable for Duke. Whenever the raised dish is empty, Katie will knock it onto the floor so as to let me know it is empty. Then she walks over and drinks out of the dish on the floor.
Duke is the slowest eater of the bunch. He comes and sniffs at his dish and then waits for me to put some of the food in my hand before he takes any. If Katie wants to take some of his food, he steps aside and lets her eat first. A perfect gentleman.
They are still not very comfortable with car rides but I put one in the passenger seat, hand out some treats and we drive around the block. Little by little they appear to be calmer. It seems they did not get much socialization and they can often be found sleeping behind the living room chair or under the dining room table. Good thing our house is compact since whenever I move, they move.
They are very calm and even though they are golden mixes, they have the golden personality. They are great with their foster siblings and have become familiar with the normal sounds of the neighborhood. They don’t ask for much…just a little attention and rubbing. You couldn’t ask for a sweeter pair.
Foster Update: 2/8/16
I had never introduced 2 foster dogs at the same time so I was wondering how this would go. Duke and Katie transitioned in so easily to my home it seemed they had always been there. They get along great with their foster siblings and have blended in with the daily routine. They are both super sweet and gentle old souls.
Duke is like glue! Unless he happens to be sound asleep, he is always right by my side. I think he loves the TLC. Duke seeks attention by joining the line-up of resident goldens for treats, petting and going outside. He eats out of his own dish and does not try to take food from anyone else. He is often curled up next to his sister, Katie but is also comfortable around the other goldens. He does have some weakness in his back legs but it does not prevent him from going outside when it is time.
Katie seemed hesitant at first to be away from brother, Duke, not the case anymore. She usually leads the pack when it is time to go outside and does not wait for her brother. Katie tends to follow me at meal times as I fill each dish and then does a happy little dance when it is her turn to eat. She sometimes tries to sneak some of Duke’s food as she eats faster than him. She is easily redirected so he can eat in peace. Katie had some skin issues when she first arrived and was very itchy. Medication and medicated shampoo seem to have solved that issue.
Both dogs are great in the house and around the other dogs. They are quiet dogs and very calm. They are looking for a forever home with someone who just wants to show them love!
Foster Update: 1/21/16
Both Katie & Duke are doing great in their foster home. Katie is more easily able to get up and go up and down the stairs. When it is time for everyone to go outside she nudges her way right up to the front of the line. She is very comfortable with the other dogs and does not seem to need to have her brother, Duke, around in order to be at ease. She sleeps very soundly at night, eats well from her dish, once in a while she seems to get confused and eats from Duke's dish but does not try to take any of the other dogs’ food.
Both Katie & Duke are so sweet. They love to be petted but are not pushy about getting attention. They wait their turn or follow their foster mom around.
Duke has some issues with mobility. He has had his back legs give out a couple of times as he was going up or down the steps. His foster mom lifts him back up on his feet and he keeps on going. He is stiff in the morning so his foster mom gives him a massage before he gets up to go outside. He does not like going outside when it is dark unless his foster mom goes out & stands out there with him, so that is what happens! He is not pushy about his food & lets Katie take some if she wants from his dish. Duke loves to rub his head/face on your leg and will moan a little for attention.
