Adopted!

My Special Sponsor: Samatha Rinaldi in honor of her 8th birthday!

Maddie: Female 8 years old

Maddie is a special girl. She has a seizure disorder and needs inexpensive daily meds to control them. Her owners were financially unable to purchase them, so they relinquished this gentle one. Maddie loves other dogs and will be fine with your cat, too. Because of her health, she may be better in a home with adults. She is a nice gal with good manners—she simply needs a loving owner who can care for her. It’ll make a world of difference for Maddie.

Foster Update: 2/24/10

Maddie is adorable! Maddie is very laid back and gets along well with her foster brothers. She has not had any accidents in the house despite being on antibiotics and needing to go out more frequently. Maddie has been sleeping thru the night…zonking out with her foster brothers and doesn’t make a sound until it is time to get up in the morning. Maddie is very affectionate and loves to be petted and cuddled. She has had a bath and is a fluff ball! Maddie is a little girl, but could stand to lose a few pounds. However, she is not crazy about her food, so her foster mom has been trying to entice her by mixing her dry with a little wet food. Maddie has not played with any of the dog toys just yet, but has been investigating the toy box with some interest, so it may just be a matter of time. Maddie is a counter surfer, but responds very well to commands and is excellent on leash. The best news of all is that Maddie has not had any seizures since she came to G.R.I.N. Maddie’s foster mom has said whoever gets to adopt her will be one lucky family! Is that you?!

Foster Update: 3/19/10

Maddie is a pleasure to have as part of our family, and will be a wonderful pet for yours!! She is a dainty little lady in appearance - she weighs only 50 pounds and according to the vet, this is the ideal weight for her frame. She is petite and compact, but at the same time is very fluffy! She has a small, alert face with bright eyes and a constantly wagging tail, especially if there is food involved!! Maddie is very affectionate - one of her favorite tricks is to bury her face in whatever part of you is nearest and waits to be petted. She is energetic and active at walk and play time and is always on her feet to see where we are going, but she enjoys her quiet times, too, as well as sleeping through the night. She is very good on the leash and knows many commands: sit, down and go to your bed are the most useful!! She is somewhat too motivated by food - we are working on improving her manners when she takes treats and gets her meals, and the ideal family will be willing to continue working on these habits with her. She is very responsive and willing to learn, but needs work to extend her attention span.

Maddie has some health issues, although they don't interfere with her quality of life!! She has seizure disorder, but the extent is not fully known so she is not yet in treatment. In a month she has had one seizure - we need to go for some time yet to see what her pattern turns out to be before medication can be prescribed. Also, when she came to G.R.I.N., her vet check indicated that her kidneys are expelling too much protein. She has been put on a low protein diet and two medications, and we are awaiting the results of some additional testing. It is not expected that her life span will be less due to this condition, but she will need to continue on a prescription diet and medication probably for the rest of her life. But wait 'til you meet her - she'll be worth it!!

Foster Update: 5/5/10

Maddie continues to be a joy for our family!! She is physically very affectionate although more in cuddling, not a lot of kisses!! It’s hard to believe that she is 8 – she dances up the stairs faster than either of her foster brothers (8 and 3)!! She is a very dainty little lady!! She has had no seizures since the one she had when she first came to us and no disoriented behavior, so it doesn’t appear that the seizures are a big issue with her. She had good numbers on the followup testing for her kidney problems, so the medications seem to be working fine – she goes back in a couple of months for a recheck. We’ve been working on her table manners and she is doing SO well – she’s much better at taking treats politely and we have seen no more counter surfing, though she still gobbles her meals! She went with me to visit my daughter for 5 days – the household includes two children (10 and 7) and 2 cats, so we now know first-hand that she is good with both!! Maddie’s ideal home would be with someone who is home during the day, and has lots of time and affection for this lovely girl – is that you?
