Athena Available after 9/7 Available for Sponsorship Athena: Female 6 years old Athena’s owner adores her, but sadly has to part with her.  Her living situation is going to change several times in short order— she is moving to California and her husband is stationed in Germany and soon to be deployed.  She doesn’t feel it’s fair to move Athena cross country and then to Europe when his deployment is over.  This pretty girl is active with a capital “A;” she is going to need plenty of exercise and attention, too.  Athena’s playful…she enjoys a game of catch and a good Kong.  She’s a smidge scared of storms, but she’s not destructive.  Athena’s had allergies in the past, but they are controlled by a venison or salmon food.  We need a really remarkable home for this gal.  Her owner took the young Athena in after finding her abandoned in a ditch and in very poor condition.  Athena is going to need extra-gentle loving through this transition…she is losing her first rescuer.
Dart Available after 9/04 Available for Sponsorship Dart: Male 3 years old Dart is one fine-looking Golden boy - he even has that special dark red fur.  Poor Dart is dealing with issues that are a result of his being homeless.  He has dry, flaky skin, infected ears and is underweight.  He has been given antibiotics, and regular nutritious meals will help clear up these problems.  But beware, his outer ears are distinctive.  Dart is missing his entire right ear flap, exposing his ear canal, and his left ear flap is partially missing.  Our vet partner feels that this is due to frostbite!  And due to the fact that his ears are sensitive right now, he may be better in a home with older children.  But please do not let this deter you from this kind, gentle boy.  The hair on his ears has grown over the ears a bit, making the irregularity almost unnoticeable.  Dart is cute as a button and will definitely be a great family addition.
Harmony Adoption pending Available for Sponsorship Harmony: Female 2 years old Harmony and her traveling pal, Mariner, were recent strays and are now happily being spoiled in G.R.I.N. foster homes!  Harmony is personality-plus—very, very entertaining.  Our transport person had this to say about Harmony: “She is just the cutest little thing I've ever seen.”  And that’s saying tons – she’s carpooled many of our Goldens!  Be quick, because Harmony will have a permanent home to rest her head shortly.  Oh and if you are looking for a pair of 4-legged fun, ask about Mariner, too.  These medium-sized, dog and kid-loving angels are extremely attached and would love to stay together, if possible.
Mariner Available after 9/04-Update! Available for Sponsorship Mariner: Male 3 years old Mariner and his traveling pal, Harmony, were recent strays and are now happily being spoiled in G.R.I.N. foster homes!  Mariner is initially shy and nervous.  Once he settles down and is reassured, he goes into natural Golden mode—playing, mouthing and begging for attention.  This handsome dude is a great walker and car-rider, too.  Oh and if you are looking for a pair of 4-legged fun, ask about Harmony, too.  These medium-sized, dog and kid-loving angels are extremely attached and would love to stay together, if possible.
Sonny Adopted! Available for Sponsorship Sonny: Male 3 years old There is more to love with Sonny—he’s one big handsome boy. Sonny’s owner relinquished him; she’s moving to a place with a dog weight limit, leaving Sonny on the outs. Sonny is so very charming and cuddly. Kids and adults alike are going to melt when they meet him. This laid-back boy will have no trouble finding a forever home – he’s a treasure.
Sadie Available for adoption-Update! Available for Sponsorship Sadie: Female 2.5 years old Sadie enjoys attention, but what Golden doesn’t?  She’s a pretty blonde and loves to let everyone know that she’s around.  Her owner relinquished her as they have three other dogs.  Sadie, being the most energetic, was relegated to the outdoors.  It’s true; she has tons of energy, as do many younger dogs.  It is a simple fix: keep her in shape with exercise, maybe jogging or a daily walk.  That’ll settle this excitable sweetie-pie.  Sadie’s not feline-friendly, but she was raised with children and other dogs.
Noah Available for adoption-Update! Available for Sponsorship Noah: Male 2 years old Today is a new beginning for this Golden boy.  Noah’s so excited because he’s going to become an indoor dog.  For his entire life he’s been chained up outdoors.  Think of the rain, the storms, and the cold!  Poor guy…but no more!  He is terrific with kids and is especially protective of them.  As of now, he’s a ladies man…he prefers female dogs, and cats are a non-issue.  He’s waiting just for you!
Max Adopted! Available for Sponsorship Max: Male 10 years old Max has had two homes in the last few years, and he hasn’t had the best of luck.  His first owner threw him out of his jeep, dumping him at a shelter!  G.R.I.N. rescued him and adopted him out; that family is moving and will not take him with them.   We are only looking for serious inquiries on this guy – he has been through the ringer!  He may be 10, but he has a lot of life in him, and lots of love to give, and he deserves the best that we can offer.  So if you are caring, committed and willing to make Max a big part of your family, please fill out an application and contact us.
Bailey Available for adoption Available for Sponsorship Bailey: Female 7 years old Hey there, Bailey here.  Do any of you suffer from allergies?  If so, you’ll understand my dilemma.  I am extremely sensitive and will need to be fed a special food - otherwise my skin reacts poorly.  G.R.I.N. is taking me to an allergist, and with proper food and care, I should see and feel a major improvement within 6 months.  I’m afraid of loud noises, like thunder, but I’m not destructive—I’m ladylike and just hide out ‘til the noise goes away.   Ok, so that is the “bad” stuff.  The good news is that I am really nice, if I do say so myself.  I would love to be around kids and other dogs.  And I certainly know how to behave in a car or on walks, which I hope to enjoy with you soon.  I am at a great Golden age, not too young, not too old…just right!
Strudel Adoption pending My Special Sponsor:     Barbara Richards Strudel: Female 12 years old Strudel is a Golden, honest!  She was given a “puppy cut;” in other words, the shelter had to buzz her fur!  Why?  Strudel was very severely matted and flea infested.  To add insult to injury, her paws were caked with mud and fecal matter…poor dear.  That’s the last time she’ll be in that condition!   She’s had a bath and yes, her hair will grow out just fine.  She’s very pleasant and just as agreeable as can be.   Strudel’s a dose of sunshine!
Simba Adoption pending!-Update& New Photos! Available for Sponsorship Simba: Male 10 years old We are looking for a special home for this gentle soul. Simba is sweet as can be and wouldn’t hurt a flea! He’s an owner relinquishment - they simply don’t have any time for this Golden anymore. Simba has skin issues which G.R.I.N. is taking care of immediately. Once properly tended to, he is going to be a beauty - and much more comfortable, too! He has lived with dogs and kids, and enjoys their company. This kind boy is just fine with cats, too. Despite his age, he’s extremely agile. Simba will be a fantastic addition to your home and he’ll enrich your life for sure!
Molly Available for adoption-Update! Available for Sponsorship Molly: Female 2.5 years old Molly and her sis, Cinnamon, came to us via a shelter.  They had been turned in by the breeder; the person who purchased the dogs from her couldn’t keep them after losing their home, so they returned them.  These poor girls have been moved around and just don’t know which end is up.  Molly is sweet, but just a little scared right now.  Molly would do well in a quieter environment, and will be good with school-age children or older.  She would enjoy another small dog to keep her company.  Perhaps what will benefit her best is a kind, gentle owner who will bestow time and attention on her!

Arnold

Arnold was the Golden Retriever that inspired the Arnold fund. This sweet guy came to us from a shelter recently.  He's only about a year old.  While at the vet awaiting his neuter, the vet noticed that Arnold couldn't open his mouth more than 1/2"...

We have received enough donations to cover all of Arnold's medical expenses. Any extra funds will be added to the General Account to help other goldens in need.

Thank you!

Update: June 20, 2007

I have been remiss about updating GRIN about Arnold, the first dog offered for sponsership.  We fostered Arnold and immediately fell in love with the big lug.  He has continued to prosper and can now even fit a tennis ball in his mouth (something we thought he would never be able to do).  Our other GRIN dog, Mattie, has kept Arnold on his toes which helped his recovery and the two of them are the best of friends.  I love to watch them wrestle.  I have a thousand wonderful Arnold stories.  Thank you, thank you, those of you who had a part in helping our Arnold.  He is a joy and a blessing to us.

Thanks, Tom and Deb K.

This sweet guy came to us from a shelter recently.  He's only about a year old.  While at the vet awaiting his neuter, the vet noticed that Arnold couldn't open his mouth more than 1/2", so they were unable to intubate him for surgery.  After a trip to the specialist and lots of diagnostics, it was discovered that his jaw had been broken in some sort of trauma (kicked? hit by a car?) and had healed improperly, thereby making it impossible for him to open his mouth more than just a little.  He is able to eat, but if he would ever have to vomit, it's very likely he would aspirate the fluid, which could cause, among other things, choking or pneumonia.  He was scheduled for surgery to improve the ability to open his mouth, but before we could get it done, he contracted kennel cough.  He's had to stay at the vet all this time, recuperating from the bordetella.  Now his corrective surgery is scheduled for the week of January 12th.  He will have to have a temporary tracheotomy in order to anesthetize him.  Needless to say, the cost of the surgery, coupled with the cost of having to board him while he got over the kennel cough has driven up his medical bills.

Update: February 13, 2004

Arnold has been adopted!!!

Arnold's foster family has fallen in love with him and couldn't bear to see him go, so they adopted him.  Not unusual when you meet a golden!  What a wonderful ending to Arnold's story.  Congratulations to the foster family!

The entire GRIN organization would like to thank all of Arnold's sponsors.  Without you, his surgery, recuperation and a long, healthy and happy life would not be possible.  We cherish your support and know how lucky we are to have such very special supporters.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

January 27, 2004:

Arnold had a follow-up appointment today. All his staples were removed and everyone is thrilled with his progress. As you can see from the photos, Arnold can now hold toys in his mouth and play with his foster sister, Mattie.

arnold_mattie2 UPDATE: January 19, 2004:

Arnold is recuperating in his foster home now.  He's enjoying the love that his new foster parents shower upon him and is getting along with his foster sister and brother.  To date, Arnold's vet bills have escalated to over $2,500 with more bills expected to come due to follow-ups and routine care.  Our generous sponsors have sent in $1,355 towards Arnold's care.  We cannot begin to show our appreciation for your generosity.  Thank you!
Arnold_POD1 Arnold's surgery date:  January 14, 2003.

Here's Arnold the day after his surgery.  The operation was a success and Arnold will be able to open his mouth about 2-3 inches, the best the doctors could do.  Arnold tolerated the surgery well and is on the way to recovery.  Through this ordeal, Arnold has been nothing but a very happy young boy, full of life and energy.

This is Arnold before his surgery.  January 8, 2003
